If you’re looking to make the switch to a more green beauty routine, there are a ton of natural beauty products out there that are chemical-free and effective. But if you prefer to go the DIY route, you can also make your skincare and makeup products yourself using products you already have in your kitchen. (That way you’ll also be able to ensure the ingredients actually come from nature!) Here, YouTube beauty blogger Stephanie Nadia walks you through all the foods in your kitchen that you should start using for a more natural—and edible—beauty routine. Beet Powder: This nutrient-rich powder is great for smoothies, but you can also combine with your moisturizer to make a natural lip and cheek stain.
Honey: It’s often used for DIY face masks, but you can also use honey to lighten hair—just mix equal parts honey and water, squeeze in a whole lemon, and spritz onto your locks. You can also use it as a natural hair spray.
Raw Milk: You may already be using a milky face wash, but if you don’t have one on hand, you can actually use raw milk itself as a simple cleanser to remove any impurities and keep skin from drying out. Simply dip a cotton swab into the milk, wipe your face, and rinse with water.
Turmeric: This golden yellow spice has a ton of health benefits, including anti-inflammatory molecules. This is also what makes it great for your skin. Mix a teaspoon of turmeric powder with honey and yogurt and leave on your skin for 15 minutes for a brighter and more even complexion.
Oatmeal: Your go-to breakfast can also be applied to your face to soothe skin that’s dry, irritated, itchy or acne-prone.
Apple Cider Vinegar: You may have tried apple cider vinegar as a digestion and weight loss aid (Here, 7 Health Benefits of Drinking Apple Cider Vinegar), but the pantry staple can also be easily incorporated into your beauty routine. Use as a natural shampoo and scalp cleanser to remove product buildup and reveal shinier locks. Or, use as a facial toner to restore skin to its natural pH levels.
Chocolate: Raw cacao powder is loaded in antioxidants and makes a great ingredient for facials. Mix 1/2 cup of cacao powder, one tablespoon honey, one tablespoon coconut oil, and a few drops of tea tree oil. Add water until you have a thick, creamy paste, then apply to skin for a nourishing skin treatment.
Strawberries: If you don’t want to buy an exfoliating strawberry-based mask, you can easily make your own DIY version bymashing five to six strawberries and adding a tablespoon of honey and brown sugar. The result is radiant and super soft skin. Double-duty beauty: Due to their acid content, you can also use strawberries as a natural teeth whitener.
